PhD update!

So my exciting news is that I’ve (finally!) received my PhD reports back. Both were very positive, and had only minor changer or additions to suggest. The reports were sent to the Dean (head) of my Faculty, who recommended that upon making the changes suggested I receive a Doctorate! So that means very shortly I’m going to be a fully fledged Dr!

The other recommendations the examiners could have returned can be found here. Basically, in terms of accepting it, they could either have approved it outright, suggested minor changes (as they did for me) or suggest more significant revisions which would make the thesis acceptable. If they didn’t think a thesis appropriate, then they could require the student to revise and resubmit it for a second examination, or they could fail it outright (Roughly translated as, “No chance. Ever.”). The latter rarely happens however - your supervisor usually keeps you well on track!

I’ve nearly finished my corrections, so the end of a nearly four year effort is nigh!

Long absence

Well, it’s been far too long since I posted last; that’s been a combination of crazy Christmas, conferences, journal papers and all sorts of wacky stuff like that. Hopefully, however, I’ll now be back on top of things and posting regularly.

This post is a little on the empty side, but I can’t help but recount a conversation I overheard passing the construction site on campus:

Construction manager: (Points to orange tube with wires poking out of it that’s been ripped up from the ground) What was this?
Worker:(Looks at it) Dunno. Wasn’t on our sheet.
Manager: Oh well. Just get it all out then.

When I walked past today, all evidence of it was gone…
